Phumeza and Shota Mdabe announce their come back after five years of healing following son being diagnosed with eye cancer. They are in no doubt  South Africa’s favourite couples. They have both had thriving careers in the entertainment industry, with Phumeza being a successful actress, while Mnqobi is a musician, also known as Shota.

Listening to Metro Fm’s morning flava had me in tears as the couple described how although they have had a strong marriage, it has not been a fairy-tale life together, and that they have had their own share of woes with their youngest son Mpilo. Their son was born with abnormally dark eyes which then later turned out to be a diagnoses of a rare form of eye cancer, that had resulted in him going blind. they had to give their careers a break to concentrate on healing for the family and their son. Their strong bond and love got them through it all.

“We are reclaiming our lives. We have waited so long and we have been through a lot. We are ready to go back to doing what we love,” says Shota.

Throughout Phumeza’s career she has made a name for herself as a television presenter, model, singer and actress, with one of her biggest roles being being on the SABC1 drama series ‘Sokhulu & Partners’, and also her role as Marcia in the drama series ‘Unmarried’. She is also a Metro FM Music Award nominee, for her album ‘Just Listen’. Mnqobi who is commonly known as Shota, gained major fame with his hit single “Seng’khathele”, and he also formed the popular music group ‘Shana’ with members such as DJ Black Coffee, and Demor, where they had a number of hits together and gained major success in the music scene.

Now over 5 years later Mpilo is a happy little boy after going through chemotherapy and a number of operations, with Phumeza and Mnqobi establishing the Mpilo Foundation, which aims to raise funds for children who are in need of eye operations or require prosthetic eyes.

The couple have released a new love song, Jabulisa, which was aired on Metro Fm this morning, to officially mark their music comeback. “This is where we started and it’s kind of a fresh start again. It’s a new chapter and dawn,” says Phumeza.
