Thamsanqa “Stax” Masiza (24) is a rapper / songwriter born in Johannesburg and raised in Dobsonville, Soweto. He grew up with a musical background, with influences from his late brother, who was highly-passionate about collecting all types of music, and his mother who used to be a member of the Dobsonville Methodist Church choir in their neighbourhood. As a teen, Stax Masiza had big dreams of making it as a house music DJ, until he went to boarding school and met a new circle of friends who inspired him to fall in love with hiphop. Soon, he got influenced by one of his closets friends (who was already making music before they met) to join him and pick up a mic. They eventually worked together on music during their days in boarding school and began taking things much more seriously after matriculating at Krugersdorp High School. In 2018 they got close to winning a record deal with Nash Records, when their music made it to the finalists for a competition that was ran in that same year. Today, Stax is still pushing to make it big in the music industry with his producer, as they continue to create their very unique sound of hiphop music and give outstanding live performances in both Cape Town, and their hometown, Johannesburg.
Stay. True. And. Xenial. is the debut EP from up and coming rapper / songwriter Thamsanqa Masiza (aka Stax Masiza). The title of the Extended Play record (if by now you still haven’t noticed) is an acronym that comes from the artist’s nickname (S.T.A.X). This EP was created in early 2018, where 2 of its lead singles “Blessed” produced by longtime high school friend from JHB, M6Beats, and “I Know” produced by another friend / Hout Bay’s sensation DJ Lava (now known as DJ Dagga), became the tone setters of the project. Soon, Stax eventually worked on more instrumentals produced by Cribo Beats from Eerste River and Cashboy from Jabulani, Soweto. The overall sound of the project is influenced by the hip-hop culture of Cape Town and the hustle & bustle side of Jozi. Throughout the 8 tracks we hear Stax rapping about Life, Love, Family, Dreams, Music and Living in two of the biggest cities in Mzansi. He is assisted by other talented vocalists such as Tremaine and Sha, as well as MC’s like C-Dawg, Messiah Jackson and Cold Zero (who he shares the same neighbourhood with in different cities). After the completion of the project in September 2019, Stax was due to releasing his debut EP 2-months later, but unfortunately had to postpone the release day after losing his eldest brother to a battle against Cancer. As that year ended, Stax recorded the last song on the project, in JHB and pushed the release date to April 10. His reasons were that he wanted to honour his late brother by releasing it within his birthday week/month. And of course, what other day would be a better day to release some good music, than on a Good Friday?
